Understanding Shaft Sinking

Shaft sinking using Jacked Caisson technique is generally used to sink segmental shafts of 2.4m to 25m diameter in poor and unstable ground conditions such as sands and gravel with a high water table. It is a system where concrete segmental rings are "Jacked" vertically into the ground using inverted hydraulic rams (jacks) which are positioned on the surface of the ground. As each completed segmental ring of concrete is "jacked" downwards into place, so the next section of segmental rings are fitted above the previous section and "jacked" downwards until the shaft is complete.

Underpinning is generally used to sink larger diameter shafts above 25m in firm ground such as rock or dry clays. It is a system where the concrete segmental rings are sunk into the ground without the use of hydraulic rams (jacks) but built beneath each other as you excavate downward either by hand or mechanical excavation.
